Abdominoplasty Q & A

What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess abdominal skin and tightens the abdominal muscles to give you a leaner, flatter, and more defined stomach.

Abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure, but a surgery aimed at revealing the abs you’ve already earned through diet and exercise.

Who is a good candidate for abdominoplasty?

To determine if abdominoplasty is the best choice for you, Dr. Burton conducts a thorough examination to learn your desires and motives and then develops the right surgical plan that meets your specific needs and goals.

Ideally, you should be:

  • At or close to your desired weight
  • In good health
  • Nonsmoker

If you’re planning a pregnancy Dr. Burton may recommend you hold off on an abdominoplasty.

What can I expect during abdominoplasty?

After you’re under anesthesia, Dr. Burton makes an incision at your bikini line to help hide scarring. He then lifts the abdominal skin and tightens the muscle layer. Then he pulls down your abdominal skin and removes the excess to tighten the area.

Dr. Burton then closes your incision.

How do I recover from abdominoplasty surgery?

Dr. Burton provides specific instructions to help you during the recovery phase of your abdominoplasty that specifies how to care for your incision at home. To aid in comfort and healing, he will place you in a compression garment to wear around your midsection.

During the first week or two after the procedure, you may experience swelling and tenderness in your abdominal region. You may also have difficulty standing upright as your body adjusts to its new shape.

Once the swelling subsides and you’re able to stand up tall, you’ll be able to fully appreciate the results of your leaner look. To maintain the results, Dr. Burton recommends you eat a healthy diet and engage in regular physical activity.
