Breast Augmentation Q & A

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation also referred to as a boob job, is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of your breasts with implants. Breast augmentation is also a good choice if your breasts are asymmetrical, lost their shape and volume after a significant weight loss or pregnancy.

Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

During your consultation with Dr. Burton, he determines if breast augmentation is the right choice for you.

Good candidates are:

  • In fine health
  • Nonsmokers
  • Dissatisfied with the size and shape of their breasts
  • Realistic about expectations

After it’s determined that you’re a good candidate for breast augmentation, Dr. Burton shows you before and after photos, so you can get an idea of what to expect. He also has you try on implant sizers in your bra to help determine the size and shape that suits your figure. Together, you determine which implant is the best choice for you.

What types of implants are available?

There are many different breast implant types available. However, the most common types are round and smooth breast implants either filled with silicone or saline.

What can I expect during breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a precise procedure that Dr. Burton performs under general anesthesia. Once under anesthesia, he makes a small incision either under your breast, at the lower edge of your areola, or under your armpit. He then inserts the silicone gel or saline implant.

Dr. Burton may place your implant:

  • Subpectoral - below your pectoral muscle
  • Subglandular - above your pectoral muscle, but below the mammary glands

The breast augmentation procedure takes one hour. After surgery, you should be up and about within a day or two, but Dr. Burton recommends you refrain from strenuous activity for five weeks. He also recommends you use a soft, conforming bra while healing to help hold your implant in place and reduce discomfort.
